Health Stack: Will Bartholomew

Each week, we tap our network of health and fitness experts to offer personal insights and recommendations.

This week: Will Bartholomew, founder and CEO of D1 Training. After an injury ended his NFL career, the former fullback set out to recreate the elite training environments he experienced at the highest level.

Will Bartholomew, founder and CEO of D1 Training.

"I’ve structured my schedule so staying in shape isn’t optional" he says. "If somebody looked at my calendar and saw my wellness routine, I want them to think, ‘Of course he’s in shape.’”

Will starts his day with water, minerals, and salt, followed by 20-30 minutes of low-intensity fasted cardio. After a quick protein shake, he hits the gym at 8:15, blocking time on his calendar until 9:30.

"Every 90 days, I reset,” he explains. “I review my goals — physical, mental, business, and ask, ‘What habits do I need to lock in to make success inevitable?’”

These days, that means prioritizing flexibility, movement, and being a role model for his kids.

Here’s Will to share his Heath Stack:

  • Whoop: “I use Whoop to monitor my daily recovery score — green, yellow, or red. Every morning I write it down. It helps me reflect and change my behavior based on how I felt the day before. I also monitor my strain to see which activities burn the most calories and how my body responds.”

  • TeamBuildr: “I follow D1 workouts using the TeamBuildr app, whether I’m at home or traveling. I adjust my workout based on my Whoop recovery score. If I’m in the red, and it’s a heavy lifting day, I’ll scale it back because I know my body is not ready.”

  • MyFitnessPal: “I track my food to hit calorie and protein goals. Protein is the priority. I aim for one gram per pound of body weight, so around 220 grams a day. My strategy? Front-load protein early so I don’t overeat later.”

  • Nike Air Force 1 Customs / NOBULL: “I prefer Air Force 1s for business casual and everyday wear. When I’m lifting, I go for NOBULL shoes.”

  • Lululemon ABC Pants: “I wear these all the time in business casual settings. They’re elevated but still feel athletic and look sharp.”

  • Vuori Ponto Half Zip: “Love the feel and the fit.”

  • Lululemon Pace Breaker Shorts: “These are my go-to for working out. Comfortable and easy.”

  • Under Armour: “I love all its baselayer, moisture-wicking, dry-fit shirts. I like to layer them under a hoodie when it’s cold. It kind of gives me that old-school feeling, like when I used to wear them under my pads.”

  • D1 Core Team Tee: “If you run into me on the street, it’s like a 95% chance I’m wearing one of these. Love repping the brand.”

On Our Radar

Interesting stories we spotted this week →

Training longevity. At 77, marathon record-breaker Jeannie Rice has the VO2 max of a 25-year-old, 45-65% higher than her peers. Her formula: run 50-75 miles a week, strength train 3x weekly, follow a Mediterranean-style diet (think veggies and fish, not fried foods or sweets) and stay socially active to avoid burnout.

Celebrating movement. Apple declared today (April 24) as "Global Close Your Rings Day," rewarding Watch users with digital badges, animated stickers, and in-store pins. According to the Apple Heart and Movement Study, consistent ring-closers sleep better, have lower resting heart rates, and report less stress than occasional users.

Workout multiplier. Combining omega-3s with exercise is a winning combo. A new meta-analysis of 21 studies found that pairing the two reduces body fat, blood pressure, triglycerides, and inflammation more effectively than exercise alone. Markers — and boosts lower-body strength by 42%. The only drawback: a slight increase in LDL cholesterol.

Coffee boosts movement. A randomized trial found coffee boosts daily step count by over 1,000 steps compared to caffeine-free days. But, it comes at a cost, reducing sleep by 36 minutes per night. Looking for energizing coffee alternatives? Try Ketone-IQ, Aubrey Marcus’ new Korrect supplement, or Apothekary’s Slay All Day™ blend.
