Health Stack: Kirsty Godso’s gym bag essentials

Each week, we tap our network of health and fitness experts to offer personal insights and recommendations.

This week: Kirsty Godso, Nike Global Trainer, founder of Made Of and Pyro. "When it comes to health and wellness, I focus on winning the little moments," Godso explains. Her approach emphasizes consistency over perfection: "Even when my schedule gets chaotic, these small habits keep me grounded and feeling good."

Kirsty Godso is a Nike Global Trainer and founder of Made Of and Pyro.

Godso is currently focused on strength training and stretching while juggling training clients and running her businesses. Between sessions, she prioritizes micro-wellness habits like quick movement breaks and taking calls during "10-minute digestive walks after meals (they're such a game-changer!)," she says.

Here’s Kirsty to share her gym bag essentials:

  • Glo Bars: “One of my best friends makes the most incredible protein bars called Glo Bars. We both struggled to find a protein bar with good ingredients, so she made some herself! Each bar has 15 grams of protein and 15 grams of fiber — they are so good! They’re the perfect solution for nutrition on the go.”

  • Magna: “This magnesium electrolyte drink is amazing! I've never loved an electrolyte drink before, this is the one! I definitely notice a difference in my energy when I drink it and — between us — it will wipe out a hangover! It has the right amount of sodium, bye salt bloating! I am obsessed with the Apple Juice flavor.”

  • Weighted Jump Rope: “I am obsessed with the weighted jump rope from Crossrope. It's super easy to switch out if you want a different weight and great to travel with. I love to jump rope as part of my warmup, it's a great way to get your cardio in.”

  • LDMA Underwear: “The perfect underwear does exist! This is my favorite active underwear, it’s flattering and functional. You can’t have your underwear distracting you during a workout — thank me later for this one.”

  • Made Of Protein: “This is a daily staple for me and a massive upgrade to my routine. Finding the perfect protein feels like such a flex because your body feels so good with the right support. I get more out of my workouts, my mornings, and my recovery by supplementing with Made Of.”

  • Beats Fit Pro: “These are the best workout earbuds! They stay in my ear and the sound quality is amazing. I've taken them on a run, through my hardest and craziest workouts, and they never move!”

  • Pyro App: “Everyone, including me, needs extra motivation sometimes. That's where the Pyro App comes in. With a library of specially curated Gym and Studio workouts, I can get a great workout based on whatever equipment and time I have available. Beware of the sculpt classes, they really bring the sizzle!”

Interesting stories we spotted this week →

Fact check. Cold plunging promises everything from longevity to mental clarity, but a review of 11 studies found limited evidence for the hype. While cold exposure reduces cortisol by 21% and improves sleep onset by 18 minutes, it also triggers concerning inflammatory responses. Easing into it with 30-second cold showers, gradually building tolerance while monitoring your response. The upside may be real, but it doesn't require extreme measures.

Do less. In his conversation with Lance Armstrong, author Michael Easter explains that removing a single destructive habit creates more dramatic improvements than adding multiple "healthy" behaviors. "If you just stop doing the things that are hurting you most, that is going to move the ball downfield the most," says Easter. Start with a two-week experiment: identify your biggest wellness roadblock and temporarily remove it, tracking energy, sleep, and mood to measure the impact.

Load up. On a recent Huberman Lab podcast, former special forces trainer Pavel Tsatsouline shared his brutal "kettlebell mile" challenge  — jogging one mile with a kettlebell equal to 30% of your body weight. While this controversial workout isn't for everyone, weighted carries are. Like Pavel, strength coach Dan John believes loaded carries and sled work are an underrated exercise.

Hunger games. Your body has built-in hunger management – you just need to activate it. Research shows moderate exercise can trigger the same appetite-suppressing hormones that weight loss drugs aim to mimic. The study found that even a single workout session helped control hunger in men with obesity, offering a natural approach to appetite regulation while providing additional benefits of physical activity.
