Health Stack: Keeth Smart
Each week, we tap our network of health and fitness experts to offer personal insights and recommendations.
This week: Keeth Smart, a 3x Olympian and silver medalist in fencing at the 2008 Beijing Games. Currently, SVP at Chelsea Piers Fitness, Keeth has a balanced approach to fitness.
Monday to Friday, his routine includes HIIT classes and weight training. Weekends bring variety with 5K jogs around Prospect Park or Peloton sessions at home.

Keeth Smart, SVP Chelsea Piers Fitness.
Here’s Keeth to share his Health Stack:
Apple Watch: “I am obsessed with closing my rings each day. Periodically, I will challenge my sister, who is also a former athlete, to a fitness challenge.”
Hyperice HyperVolt 2: “I use this for recovery after a hard spin class or HIIT workout. I also own Hyperice’s Foam Roller and Hyperice X Knee to treat nagging injuries.”
IsoPure Whey Protein: “My go-to recovery shake after runs and hard workouts for close to two decades.”
Apple AirPods Pro and Apple Fitness: “When I’m warming up, I always do a 10 or 15 minute class with one of the Apple Fitness rowing instructors.”
New Balance 860: “I recently made the switch from Asics to these New Balance sneakers and I love them.”
Steam Rooms: “Going into the steam room is a must for me after every workout.”
Peloton Bike: “I typically only use it on the weekends, either during the winter or when weather’s bad. I usually opt for a 30 or 45 class with a good playlist.”
Under Armour Performance T-Shirts: “This is my go-to workout shirt. Lightweight and breathable.”
Lululemon ABC Joggers: “On the weekends and during the spring and summer seasons, I wear Lululemon’s ABC joggers almost every day. I like the fit and they are quite comfortable.”

On Our Radar
Interesting stories we spotted this week →
Volume > frequency. New research shows cramming workouts into longer weekend sessions yields the same fitness gains as spreading them out. Both weekend warriors and high-frequency trainers improved fitness equally — as long as the total volume matched. . The takeaway? "How much" matters more than "how often."
Joyful longevity. Professor Kerry Burnight coined "joyspan" to describe the years spent truly enjoying life, not just surviving. Her advice:: Grow (stay curious), Adapt (embrace change), Give (help others), and Connect (invest in relationships). A long life doesn’t matter if you’re not enjoying the ride.
Explosivity. Squatting with chains led to bigger gains in power, jump height, and explosiveness compared to traditional barbell squats. Chains add variable resistance, increasing the load as you stand, making you generate more force throughout the lift. No chains? Resistance bands offer a similar effect.
Sweet spot. In a study of 68,000 people, moderate zinc intake delayed biological aging by 0.13 years. However, high doses (40mg+ daily) accelerated aging by over 3 years. Dial in your dose: Too much zinc can disrupt mineral balance and increase oxidative stress, speeding up aging.
