Pumped on Pilates
Pilates is booming, attracting everyone from actress Jennifer Aniston to Texans’ wideout Stefon Diggs.
Old school, new cool: Developed in the 1920s by physical trainer Joseph Pilates, this method’s effectiveness and versatility makes it the go-to for all ages and abilities levels.
Every body: "Any body can do it," says Carrie Samper, director of Pilates education for Equinox. "You don't have to be 25 and a Cirque du Soleil dancer. You can be 85 and start doing Pilates."
Hyperice CEO Jim Huether calls the practice "game-changing." A recent convert, Huether credits Pilates with transforming his fitness: "I'm in the best shape I've been in since my twenties, and I'm in my early forties now. I just have a lot more energy," he told Wellworthy.
The popularity of Pilates has boomed in recent years.
Mind-body: Pilates emphasizes breath control and core engagement, using strategic repetitions to deliver a surprisingly challenging workout. Research shows it can:
Prevent injury and reduce chronic pain
Support mental health
The practice engages muscles traditional training misses and sharpens mental focus through hyper-controlled movements. The result? You’ll get stronger and more dialed in, without the impact or intensity of other exercise modalities.
Get moving: More popular than ever, there’s probably a studio around the corner — Club Pilates, [solidcore], STRONG Pilates, and JETTSET host workouts ranging from newcomer to next level.
Gear up. Tech-enabled equipment from Frame, Flexia, and Reform RX enable personalized Pilates sessions from the comfort of home, while Rachel Katzman's Pvolve offers hybrid Pilates-inspired training.
The Bottom Line: Whether you’re prioritizing recovery, performance, or longevity, Pilates checks all the boxes. If you’re looking for a total-body workout that strengthens the mind and muscles, look no further. But don’t be surprised if you can’t make it through a full session on your first try.

My Health Stack by Tim Rosa
Each week in our Health Stack series, Wellworthy taps into its network of health and fitness experts to offer personal insights and recommendations.
This week: Tim Rosa. Tim is the CEO of Somnee, the smart sleep headband that improves sleep through EEG sensors and neurostimulation.
A keen surfer, runner, and mountain biker, Tim’s wellness routine blends time in nature and with tech-enabled products to keep him feeling his best.
Here’s Tim to share his Health Stack:
Supplements: “To support my overall health, muscle growth, and energy, I enjoy taking the following supplements regularly: Transparent Labs Creatine HMB, Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, Super Beet Chews, Huel Black, Momentous Tongkat AI and Multivitamin, and Garden of Life Collagen.”
Equinox: “I like to go off hours for brutally enjoyable air bike rides and weight training followed by a post-workout steam session.”
Wearables: “I have always worn multiple wearables at the same time to test out different features and functionality depending on what I’m doing. I’m currently wearing an Apple Watch because of the LTE function and also rotate in a Fitbit Charge, WHOOP, Garmin Fenix, and various smart rings like Oura and UltraHuman.”
Peloton: “The Peloton is great for supplementing workouts at home when I only have a small window of availability. My go-to trainer is Ben Alldis. His workouts are super fun and challenging, and he brings positive energy to every session.”
Rogue Echo Bike V3: “I’m absolutely addicted to my Rogue Air Bike as a great low impact cardio blast I can swiftly hammer out in the morning and/or before workouts to accelerate my heart rate.”
Somnee Smart Sleep Headband: “As someone who’s experienced a lifelong struggle with sleep, Somnee has become a non-negotiable part of my nighttime routine. It delivers personalized neurostimulation with EEG sensors and only requires a quick 15-minute session each night.”
Eight Sleep: “The Eight Sleep pod and accompanying app are a major factor in ensuring I’m able to maintain my sleep quality throughout the night. It helps your body ease into the optimal cool temperature, which is one of the most important factors when it comes to both falling and staying asleep.”
Surfing: “Surfing is my favorite activity, as it addresses both the physical and mental side of health. The products I use to perform my best while surfing include Matuse Wetsuits, Christenson Surfboards, Campbell Bros Surfboards, or Donald Takayama Surfboards (depending on condition and location), Surfline (an online publication/community for all things surf-related), and Vertra Sunscreen.”
Trail running and mountain biking: “Living across the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin, I’m surrounded by majestic nature and adventure activities, from paddleboarding the San Francisco Bay, surfing the Pacific Ocean, and biking, running, and hiking on Mount Tamalpais. As for equipment, my go-to options include Brooks Catamount trail shoes and the Pivot Trail 429 mountain bike.”
