Health Stack: Jacob Peters
Each week in our Health Stack series, Wellworthy taps into its network of health and fitness experts to offer personal insights and recommendations.
This week: Jacob Peters, co-founder of Superpower, a concierge health platform.
Jacob believes that "optimal health requires a proactive approach.” He starts each day with vagal nerve stimulation, a 45-minute sauna or workout, and 10 minutes on a rebounder. “When you're scaling a fast-growing company, optimizing your body and mind isn't just nice to have – it's essential," says the startup founder.
"My focus is on the foundations: sleep, hydration, detox, and gut health,” he adds.
Here's Jacob to share his Health Stack:
Truvaga 350: “This stimulates my vagus nerve on the neck and helps me relax and calm the nervous system to increase HRV.”
Rebounder: “I do this for 10 mins a day every morning. It's great for lymphatic drainage and getting the circulatory and digestive systems going also.”
Quinton Hypertonic: “I take these at least 2-3x a day. They are instantly hydrating and so convenient. Full of electrolytes and trace minerals that get removed from high-quality water filters. The glass form factor is also fun and a great conversation starter.”
Oura Ring: “I can't sleep without my oura ring! I like knowing my HRV and deep sleep percentage over time.”
Vera Salt: “Most salt has microplastics so I love that vera is clean and good tasting. great for salting my water for hydration and cooking!”
Zeolite Spray: “Zeolite is a mineral known for its powerful binding properties, which helps trap and remove toxins, heavy metals, and pollutants from the body.”
Superpower Health Testing: “Superpower for all of my health testing. I do full 100-point blood testing monthly. It stores all of my results over time and makes it easy to get ahead of health issues and proactively make sure I'm operating at my best.” (Sign-up here to skip the queue to join Superpower.)
Food fix
Consuming empty calories and highly processed food is sabotaging our health. Here's the fix.
Reality check. The Standard American Diet (SAD) falls critically short of nutritional requirements, warns Dr. Penny Kris-Etherton, Professor Emeritus at Penn State University and Science Advisory Board Member at humann. "Poor diet quality is a major risk factor for chronic diseases and death among older adults," she explains.
Breaking it down. Favoring convenience over quality has created a perfect storm of health challenges:
Most Americans fall short on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes
Diets are too high in sodium, saturated fat, and added sugars while lacking adequate fiber
Fake food. Much of our food is lab-made, notes Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, gastroenterologist and founder of 38TERA. "We now have thousands of additives in our food supply that we know very little about the long-term effects of,” he adds.
While these additives make food shelf-stable and hyper-palatable, they can spike blood sugar, disrupt gut health, and increase inflammation, Dr. Bulsiewicz advises.
Missing link. Additives are a major issue, but so is the absence of fiber. "If we do one thing to improve our diet, it should be to increase fiber intake," urges Dr. Bulsiewicz, explaining that a fiber-rich diet is linked to longer life and less disease.
Change your mind. Transitioning to healthier eating doesn't have to be overwhelming. Stary by prioritizing whole, nutrient-dense foods and checking food labels for shorter, more recognizable ingredients. Reframing meal time, Lyla Joffe, MS, RDN at Fay recommends focusing on “how food fuels you and makes you feel.” It can be “medicine or poison,” she adds.
The bottom line: As Dr. Kris-Etherton says, “We need to transition away from routinely eating ultra-processed and fast foods." While it requires effort, the rewards – better health, more energy, and reduced disease risk – make it worth the investment.
