Why we need adventure

Stuck in predictable routines, fewer Americans feel happy or satisfied with their lives. Taking action, embracing new challenges is essential to breaking the cycle.

Taking the leap. When Cadence co-founder Ross Mackay laced up for the Berlin Marathon, he entered unknown territory. "Running is relatively new to me, and the idea of running a marathon always seemed a little crazy," he tells Wellworthy.

For Matt Christopherson, the challenge was even bigger: becoming the first person to run the Gran Fondo from Vancouver to Whistler. The grueling 125km (80-mile) course with 1,900 meters of elevation pushed him to his absolute limits.

"Crossing that grand finish in Whistler was unforgettable," Christopherson reflects. "It proved that our minds are our only limitations."

The science of adventure. New challenges transform the mind and body, relieving anxiety, sparking joy, and enhancing overall well-being.

Make your move. Adventure doesn't need to be extreme. The key is stepping outside your comfort zone. Whether it's rucking, running a 5K, or signing up for a HYROX fitness race, commit to trying something new and pushing yourself.

Finding your why. For Mackay, it was a personal challenge. "I thrive on having something tangible to work toward," he shares. For Christopherson, it was supporting his friend fighting cancer.

Your why could be supporting a cause, testing limits, or even escaping routine — just make it meaningful enough to fuel you through the tough moments.

The bottom line: Embrace new challenges as a way of life to level up your confidence and outlook. As Christopherson reflects, "When we dream the improbable, you'll be amazed at what's possible."

Health Stack: The gear that supported Matt Christopherson

Matt Christopherson at the Gran Fondo finish line in Whistler, Canada.

Going deeper, Christopherson shared his go-to training, recovery, and race-day products:

  • Othership: “I used a dry sauna and ice baths to optimize and promote muscle recovery. Most notably, post-run, I regularly visited Othership for guided sessions to expedite my recovery process.”

  • Reigning Champ: “Known for their premium athletic wear, Reigning Champ became an obvious choice for me. Not only are they Vancouver-based, but their ethos is anchored in supporting athletes on and off the field–something that is fully aligned with our mission.”

  • Opscotch At-Home Testing: “I was testing my critical health markers with Opscotch’s at-home blood biomarker tests every two weeks to fully understand any deficiencies or irregular trends as a result of inflammation and increased stress on the body.”

  • HOKA:HOKA is my footwear of choice. With their added cushion, Meta-Rocker, and active foot frame, HOKA allowed me to perform at my peak allowing me to keep my mind on the run, and not on my feet.

  • Supplements:Even with the increased zone 2 training, I was able to maintain my lean muscle tissue, which I largely contribute to my daily nutritional regimen, including supplementation with Opscotch’s Beef Protein. During the 125km run, Maurten, Ketone-IQ, and LMNT were all key contributors to my success.”

  • Myodetox: “The clinicians at Myodetox assessed and treated me almost weekly, ensuring optimal movement and addressing any discomfort that arose during my training.
