Health Stack: Patrick Schwarzenegger

Each week, we tap our network of health and fitness experts to offer personal insights and recommendations.

This week: Patrick Schwarzenegger, actor and co-founder of MOSH – the brain health brand he started alongside his mother, Maria Shriver.

"These days, I'm really focusing on staying healthy, not just for my body, but for my mind and brain health too," explains Schwarzenegger, who’s currently starring in season 3 of HBO’s White Lotus.

When he’s not filming, Schwarzenegger says he “thrives on structure, especially in the morning.” Typically, he starts the day with a walk alongside his fiancée, “We usually roll out of bed and head straight out,” he says. “We'll grab coffee, stroll down to the beach, and share what we're grateful for.” After this morning walk, Schwarzenegger fits in a workout and sauna session before heading to work at MOSH.

Here’s Schwarzenegger to share his go-to supplements and snacks:

  • Chomps Meat Sticks: “These are a lifesaver when I'm traveling or on set. I'm always looking for stuff that won't spoil, is clean, low in calories and sugar, but still gives me the protein I need. These are just so easy to throw in my bag when I'm running around all day.”

  • Thorne Creatine: “A high-quality creatine powder or supplement is a daily must-have for me. It's great for building muscle and keeping my bones strong, plus there's some new research suggesting it might be good for brain health too, which is a nice bonus.”

  • Cure Hydration Powders: “It’s easy to get dehydrated after long days on set, so these have been a game-changer for me. I love that they're made with real ingredients and don't have any added sugar – those are two big things I always look for.”

  • Buoy Hydrating Wellness Drops: “These have become my go-to lately because they're even easier than powders. I love that these come in a little dropper and are completely tasteless – no sugar, no sweeteners, no flavors. You just need a tiny bit in whatever you're drinking, and you're good to go!”

  • MOSH’s Brain-Boosting Protein Bars: “I honestly eat these almost every day, especially when I'm filming or traveling. On set or during flights – you never know what food options you'll have, so it's awesome having a healthy snack I can count on that's packed with protein and low in sugar. We just reformulated our bars, too, loading them with great stuff like lion's mane, ashwagandha, omega-3s, and vitamins B12 and D3.”

On Our Radar

Interesting stories we spotted this week →

Longevity diet. A 30-year study of 100,000+ adults found those eating more plant-based foods and fewer ultra-processed ones in midlife were significantly more likely to reach age 70 disease-free. Just 9.3% of participants achieved "healthy aging," while those consuming the most ultra-processed foods had 32% lower odds of aging well. The winning formula? More fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains; fewer ultra-processed foods, sodium, and trans fats.

Sleep science. Poor sleep dramatically impacts glucose control — just one bad night reduces it by 25%, with sub-7-hour sleepers experiencing larger blood sugar spikes.  HIIT workouts can help offset sleep-related metabolic damage. The optimal strategy: prioritize 8 hours nightly and schedule intense training when sleep falls short.

Strength strategy. Optimal muscle growth may require less work than you think. A study of experienced lifters found those maintaining moderate volume (14 weekly sets) gained as much muscle as those increasing by 30-60%. Surprisingly, the moderate group saw the biggest strength gains — improving squats by 19% versus 10-12% in higher-volume groups. The takeaway: training close to failure with moderate volume (12-20 weekly sets per muscle group) appears optimal for most lifters, allowing better recovery between sessions.

Food policy. West Virginia enacted the nation's most comprehensive ban on artificial food dyes, prohibiting seven common colorings statewide by 2028 and from school meals starting this August. "Once states start banning unsafe ingredients, the food industry won't create products for specific states," explains Dr. Jennifer Pomeranz of NYU. "They'll reformulate for the whole country, the way they've done in Europe."
